A few months ago I wrote about a book I was reading, The Artist’s Way, by Julia Cameron. I finally finished it in January and found it really insightful. Cameron makes the argument that the creative process is a spiritual one, which was a new idea to me. I have often considered my musical life to be at odds with my spiritual one. It’s been hard to unify the two. The biggest “Ah ha” moment in the book for me, was when she noted that God is a creator, therefore he is creative. And we are made in his image; so being creative is at the very core of who we are as well!
Cameron also works hard to help the reader dispel thoughts that keep one from creating—the idea that we are too old, not talented enough, too flawed, never going to actually make a living with this art… All of which are thoughts I have had at some point. She encourages the reader to create nonetheless. Create because it’s what we are made to do, and let God handle the outcome of the art.
Hope you allow yourself some creative time this month,
